Martin Harvey

Despite some success in other academic areas, a family history of musical achievement, and the encouragement of his parents, Martin failed utterly to distinguish himself musically at school. Then, at the age of 17, he built himself an electric guitars, formed a band and joined the late-70s New Wave movement.

Martin

Whilst living in London for ten years (as student, engineer in industry then small-business person), the home-made instruments saw sporadic action on the pub music scene, playing with a number of funk/soul/blues outfits.

Turning 30 and moving to Bristol, Martin became a student at the jazz workshops led by bassist Dave Goodier. After a year, the guitar was abandoned for electric bass, followed soon after by the double bass. There was no looking back.

Three years at the workshops were followed by five years of intensive playing on the Bristol jazz circuit, sharing a stage (or the corner of a pub) at one time or another with a great many different musicians. More contemporary areas have also been revisited, thanks mainly to the 90's 'unplugged' vogue for acoustic instruments.

Martin has maintained a keen interest in the technical side of music making. His first home recording was done on a 4-track tape machine made from an old cassette player. More recently this has been replaced by computer-based recording and music generation. He's also been involved at various times with sound and lighting control for live music events.
