the groove project is a collective of instrumentalists and vocalists dedicated to creating and performing original, groove-based music. The band draws on many different sources of musical inspiration, but the emphasis is currently on funk, jazz and latin influences. See our listening page to find out more about what people are listening to at the moment. The musicians meet on a regular basis for full-band rehearsals, sectionals, listening sessions and other events. On average, each band member will have a rehearsal of some kind every two weeks, but from time to time sessions may happen more frequently. For a more accurate picture of what is happening at the moment have a look at the calendar. The project offers many different opportunities. The focus of each session is on strong group playing, composition and improvisation. Music is learnt and played by ear, but there is help and support available for anyone who chooses to write parts down or who wishes to learn more about reading and writing music. All members of the band are encouraged to share whatever skills they have, whether through coaching less experienced players, lyric writing, organising gigs, designing publicity materials or planning budgets. The majority of band members are young people between the ages of eleven and eighteen who live in and around Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire - however there are no hard and fast rules regarding membership. Anyone with open ears and an excess of enthusiasm is welcome to apply! For more information, go to the contact page. The project was formed by jazz flautist and composer Katie Elliott in association with the Wotton Arts Project. To find out more about her or any of the other musicians who work with the band have a look at the people page.
